SmartGuide web app - A faster way to start your self-guided tour

Written by SmartGuide | Jul 23, 2026 11:46:32 AM

Getting as many visitors as possible to start using a digital guide requires a straight-forward way to the tour content, right after scanning a QR code, with no additional downloads or detours. That’s why SmartGuide is introducing the SmartGuide web app, planned for release in September 2026.

As part of the SmartGuide digital audio guide platform, this upgrade will be available automatically for all the content authors (destinations, attractions, tour operators, museums, and tourism businesses) whose guides are published on SmartGuide, including the automatic change of already issued QR codes.

By removing the need to install an app before listening to an audio guide, the new web app helps more visitors start exploring from their very first scan.

Let's see in detail how the SmartGuide web app works, why it reduces visitor drop-off, and what it means for tourism organizations and content creators using SmartGuide.

How the SmartGuide web app works?

Starting a digital guide should take only a few seconds. Here's how the journey works with the new web app, from the first scan to advanced features available only in the SmartGuide app.

Step 1: Scan a QR code at a point of interest

The process begins when a visitor scans a SmartGuide QR code placed at a point of interest, such as a museum exhibit, historical monument, heritage site, trail stop, or tourist attraction. Instead of searching for an app or navigating through multiple pages, visitors can access the guide content directly from the location they are exploring.

Step 2: Open the guide instantly in the browser

After scanning the QR code, the SmartGuide web app opens immediately in the visitor's browser. There is no need to download an app or visit an app store before getting started. Visitors can begin listening to the audio guide within seconds, making it much easier to engage with the content while standing at the point of interest, not wasting any time with an app download.

Step 3: Continue exploring the destination

Beyond the audio playback in 30+ languages, the web app offers also additional information about each location that visitors can read. Visitors can browse an interactive map too, discover nearby points of interest, and continue exploring throughout their visit. The web app provides everything visitors need to complete an entire self-guided tour directly in the browser.

Step 4: Continue in the full SmartGuide App for more features

Visitors who want additional functionality can continue their journey in the full-fledged SmartGuide app. The app provides features designed for longer and more advanced visits, including offline guides, background GPS-triggered audio, AI guide (that can answer questions visitors might have when a live guide is not available), AI tour planner, augmented reality (AR), and other premium capabilities. This gives visitors an easy way to start instantly while offering additional options whenever they need them.

Why removing app installation means more visitors use your digital guides

One of the biggest challenges for digital guides is asking visitors to install an app before they can start exploring.

Although many visitors are interested in learning more about a destination, every extra step increases the chances that they will leave before accessing the guide. Some postpone the installation for later and never come back, while others simply decide it isn't worth the effort. QR codes have become a familiar way to access information at museums, attractions, and heritage sites, but requiring an app download immediately after scanning creates an unnecessary barrier that results in fewer people listening to audio guides and engaging with available content.

The new SmartGuide web app option removes this barrier by opening the guide instantly in a web browser after a QR code is scanned, allowing visitors to see the value of the guide before deciding whether they want additional features available in the SmartGuide app.

This reduces visitor drop-off, makes the first interaction quicker and easier, and helps more people use the digital content provided.

Automatic upgrade for content authors, simpler access for visitors

One of the advantages of publishing guides on SmartGuide is that new platform improvements become available automatically. The SmartGuide web app will be rolled out at no extra cost for all the content creators with guides on SmartGuide.

There is no additional development, migration, or rebuilding required, as is often the case with custom tourist apps, and existing guides will continue working without any changes. This means tourism stake holders can offer a better first-time visitor experience, and reduce visitor drop-off without investing in another development project.

For visitors who already have the SmartGuide app installed, nothing changes. Scanning a SmartGuide QR code will continue to open the guide in the app, providing access to all available features.

Visitors who are new to SmartGuide, however, will open the SmartGuide web app directly in their browser, allowing them to start exploring immediately without installing anything. If they later want features such as offline access, AI Guide, background GPS triggering, or tour planning, they can continue in the SmartGuide app.

This approach removes friction at the beginning of the visit while keeping advanced functionality available whenever visitors choose to use it.
